Precautions and Preparations Prior PC Upgrade

Beyond the tools that are normally needed while doing some work around electronic stuff at home, there are very few specialized tools required when you are upgrading your computer. These tools are not mandated if you are careful enough.

It is a conductive mat that you can use to place all equipment’s on. The band can be slipped over your wrist and can be attached to earth point, for e.g. radiator pipe. This ensures that if any static is generated on your body or cloth, it will be safely discharged before it causes any damage to the electronic components.

If you do not want to buy any of these, keep the power cable of your computer connected to the working socket, but keep the switch off. Earth yourself by touching the metal of your computer’s cabinet.

Handle all the components by its edge (as you hold a CD) and do not touch any part on the board, to avoid any damage to sensitive components with the static current.

Place the removable component in the anti-static bag that the new component came with.

Here are some of the tools that are useful while handling sensitive electric components on your PC. These are not mandatory but are very helpful in keeping caution.

Standard electrical screwdriver is helpful in removing the screws, although in many cases it won’t be required. You can also buy a PC Tool kit, but this is overkill unless you fix PCs for your living.

In case of some trouble, a multimeter is very useful, but it is not required in a normal scenario. Most upgrades are simply done by swapping the faulty component with the new one.
